Janacek & Martinu

String Quartets

Doric String Quartet

(Chandos)

Janacek's late string quartets were both inspired by female figures, one fictional, one real-life, and there is an obsessive quality to these outpourings from the composer's heart.

Some performers link the quartets back to the romantic tradition, but the Doric String Quartet stresses the music's volatility, catching the pain and ecstasy that can live in the same moment.

These are highly strung performances, not always comfortable but alive. Martinu's String Quartet No. 3, described by the composer as if "made of china", makes a well-chosen companion piece.
