Janacek

Orchestral Works Vol. 2

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra

(Chandos)

How is it that even the scraps from some composers' pens can be so magical?

Nobody could fail to recognise Janacek in the little-known symphonic poem The Ballad of Blanik or his unfinished symphony The Danube, bitty though they may seem.

The longest piece here is Taras Bulba, drawn from Gogol's bloodthirsty tale, played with compassion as well as ferocity by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner.

James Ehnes is the expert soloist in the unfinished Violin Concerto, The Wandering of a Little Soul. Minor miracles everywhere.
