A Royal Night Out - film review

A Royal Night Out is a tub of old froth. The young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret leave Buckingham Palace for a bender on the evening of VE Day in a Britcom designed to be catnip to monarchophiles but likely to be catatonia for everyone else.

See Princess Mags flirt, dance, fall down drunk! See Liz fall differently, and romantically, for a gauche slab of a soldier boy! Watch the cast perform like waxworks (Rupert Everett's King, Emily Watson's Queen) or alternatively - Bel Powley's OTT Mags - like clockwork dolls lethally overwound. Sarah Gadon as Elizabeth comes off best. The Canadian actress knows, or seems to, how to put the right distance between herself and royalty mania.
