Franz SchubertSonatas, Impromptus, Moments Musicaux
Andras Schiff
(ECM New Series)
The booklet essay is entitled "Confessions of a Convert". Andras Schiff tells how, after initial scepticism, he was won over to playing Schubert on a period fortepiano.
He now owns an 1820 instrument by Franz Brodmann and on this 2-disc set, recorded in the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, shows how its muted, delicate sound can transform Schubert for modern listeners.
Two of the piano sonatas, the G Major, D894, and the late B Flat, D960, speak to us as if in an intimate tete-a-tete.
The Moments musicaux, D 780, and the Four Impromptus, D 935, smile with informal grace.
