The Theory of Everything - DVD review

Directed by James Marsh, 2014

Universal

Eddie Redmayne's Oscar-winning turn as Stephen Hawking is an impressive feat of impersonation, but disguises The Theory of Everything's conventional and occasionally clunky approach to its subject.

Most disappointing is the timidity with which Hawking's work is described: we are never really challenged to assess its importance, while an overemphasis on the role of God in the film's various set-piece debates feels like a copout.

The familiar story unravels in predictable style: in this of all stories, there was surely scope for a more adventurous handling of time and space.
