My Morning Jacket

The Waterfall

(ATO Records)

The Waterfall opens with My Morning Jacket's frontman Jim James taking a journey to "the furthest shore of the mind".

The trip leads the Kentucky hippy-rock revivalists into some wrong turns, such as overwrought country-rock in which the words "You're so sweet and sexy, yeah" feature in unfortunate conjunction ("Big Decision").

But they reach their far-out destination on "Tropics (Erase Traces)", a mystical, proggy number that tries to blast open the "window to another world" that James sings about with a magnificently fiery guitar solo and a mantra-like beat.
