Snapshot: 'Portraits in Lace: Breton Women', by Charles Freger

The French photographer Charles Freger, best known for his 2012 photobook Wilder Mann, is fascinated by myth and ritual. He has travelled around the world taking pictures of people who adhere to strict folk traditions, often wearing primal, ceremonial outfits unique to their culture - from the brightly costumed mahouts sitting atop painted elephants in Rajasthan to elderly men wearing modest kotenyek (small cloths) in a public bath house in Budapest.

The picture is taken from his new photobook Portraits in Lace: Breton Women, which features women from Brittany, northwest France, who are reviving traditional costumes last worn in the 1950s.

'Portraits in Lace: Breton Women' by Charles Freger will be published by Thames & Hudson on May 18. Photographs from the book will be displayed at various galleries in Brittany from June 6; for more information see charlesfreger.com
