Inside No 9 - Series 2 - DVD review

BBC, 2015

In an age when television series are celebrated for their long arcs, Inside No 9 makes for a refreshing change of pace. Each half-hour episode is a neatly self-contained story and, like a 21st-century update of Tales of the Unexpected, each has a kink or two in its tail.

In this welcome second helping, endlessly inventive writer/performers Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton (The League of Gentlemen, Psychoville) range across a wide array of styles, from a claustrophobic chiller set in a call centre to a Pythonesque pastiche of a medieval witch trial.

High-calibre guest stars, including Alison Steadman, Jane Horrocks and David Warner, contribute to great ensemble work.

The dominant tone is black comedy but there are unexpected lurches; you never know when a trap door will open, plunging you into ghoulish horror or lingering pathos.
