Death

N.E.W.

(Drag City)

Although a new album, N.E.W. is really one for rock's archivists. It comes from Death, an African-American proto-punk band from Detroit in the 1970s, near contemporaries of the Stooges but hardly heard outside the underground until being rescued from obscurity by later generations.

The songs on N.E.W. play to anachronistic strengths: vintage Hendrix-style guitar licks, "Detroit rocks!" lyrics, rumbling garage-rock. It's a genial trip back in time from a band that time almost forgot.
