Niccolo Castiglioni

La Buranella; Altisonanza; Salmo XIX

Danish National Symphony Orchestra

(Chandos)

Will the real Castiglioni please stand up?

This enterprising disc from the Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gianandrea Noseda includes three works by the mid-20th century Italian composer, which sound like three different hands at work.

The first, La Buranella, is a Baroque pastiche straight out of Stravinsky's Pulcinella.

The second, Altisonanza, turns impressionist French with Messiaen-like birdsong.

The third, Salmo XIX, is modernist Italian chic, courtesy of Berio, with added chorus.
