The Duke of Burgundy - DVD review

Directed by Peter Strickland, 2014

Artificial Eye

A very different sort of bondage is at play in Peter Strickland's follow-up to Berberian Sound Studio.

The look is pure 1970s erotica - soft-focus daydream, breathy vocal soundtrack, a symphony of silk and nylon.

Borgen's Sidse Babett Knudsen employs domestic Chiara D'Anna and chores move from kitchen to bedroom and even toilet.

For a while the power games recall The Servant but having built up an atmosphere of kinky decadence, Strickland punctures it with the amusingly mundane: the dom gets a sore back, a mosquito infiltrates the sub's bondage box and so on. Postmodern irony: the ultimate passion killer.

Those hoping for climax or resolution may want to deploy their safe word long before the tease has run its course.
