Cobain: Montage of Heck - review

Directed by Brett Morgen, 2015

Universal Pictures UK

"We're prepared to destroy our careers if it happens," said Kurt Cobain of the superstardom predicted for Nirvana on the release of Nevermind. Three years later he was dead, at 27.

The recording is part of an archive impressively distilled into Brett Morgen's documentary, which includes Cobain's art work and journals, animation layered between interviews with loved ones.

Home movies reveal little Kurt as a child star in his own family, which soon broke up and then gradually rejected him. His attempts to find refuge in punk rock, heroin and a drug-dependent marriage are well known.

What Morgen reveals most touchingly is that behind labels of icon, superstar or tragic addict lies the story of a human being as explicable as any other.
