Two decades into a career as a world-renowned pastry chef, John Kraus moved to Minneapolis in 2010 to open Patisserie 46, a stylish cafe and bakery that fuses a chatty, mom-and-pop store atmosphere with his high- end brand of artisan breads, eclairs and cakes.
The quaint cafe brings a European touch to south Minneapolis's Kingfield district, in the picturesque Chain of Lakes area that is 10 minutes from downtown, and offers a diverse and cheery blend of old money and modern urban living.
Whether you prefer sweet or savoury, pastries this perfect in an atmosphere this inviting are rare anywhere in the world, making Patisserie 46 the perfect spot to impress a client or meet a contact.
Mr Kraus' credentials as a patissier are difficult to exaggerate. He has done stints at London's Dorchester Hotel and Chicago's prestigious French Pastry School. In January 2015, his chocolate cake - which is nicknamed The Peacemaker - helped the US national team earn a bronze medal at the biennial World Pastry Cup held in Lyon, France.
Breakfast patrons often opt for the ham and Gruyere croissant, while guests in search of a decadent mid-afternoon treat might opt for a kouign-amann, a traditional buttery, crusty cake from Brittany; an Earl Grey-infused blackcurrant scone; or a "pecan cinnamon pull-apart".
