'Light Shining in Buckinghamshire', National Theatre, London

One of five plays on major stages in the next few months by the groundbreaking playwright Caryl Churchill, Light Shining in Buckinghamshire takes us back to Churchill's early days as a dramatist. Written in 1976, it is a rich, epic, panoramic collage of scenes about the radical political and religious movements after the English civil war in the 17th century - an era often overlooked in history lessons. The Parliament men who fought against the king look to bring stability after a period of turbulence and poverty, but a group of dissenters, rebels and preachers seek change on a more fundamental level.

It's about hope, failed revolution and the betrayal of ideals and could feel resonant for audiences familiar with widespread disillusionment with conventional political parties. Lyndsey Turner, an immensely skilled director (Chimerica, Posh) stages the work with an 18-strong ensemble and the designer is the multi-award winning Es Devlin.
