Directed by Peter Jackson, 2014
Warner
Another year, another army of steaming, blood-ravenous orcs.
As Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth trilogy draws to its conclusion, a certain battle-weariness sets in - and not just among Bilbo and his posse of hairy adventurers.
Although there are terrific set-pieces and dazzling sequences in this closing instalment, as well as a splendid pipe-sucking scene with Gandalf and Bilbo, the film is a long slog and feels a little jumbled (you might find yourself asking afterwards, for instance, who exactly were the five armies?).
The end, when it eventually arrives, does so not with a sense of regret, but relief.
