Big Eyes - DVD review

Directed by Tim Burton, 2014

Entertainment in Video

Could it be that Tim Burton saw a bit of himself in the story of an artist who found fame while being criticised for adhering to the same old Gothic-lite aesthetic?

In the 1950s, Walter Keane made a fortune by painting portraits of cartoonish waifs with mournful expressions and oversized peepers. Except he didn't paint them.

Amy Adams is winningly winsome as Margaret Keane, the browbeaten wife who actually applied oils to canvas while Walter (Christoph Waltz) just dispensed oily charm.

There's not much more to the story than that and subsidiary characters are slight, but the leads are perfectly cast and Burton keeps things light and pacy, ditching his usual look to deliver a diverting anti-noir shot through with Californian sunshine.
