Martin, Ravel, et al

If the Owl Calls Again

Christianne Stotijn

(Warner Classics)

Do not ask why the title of this disc is relevant. The only owl in evidence is the one pictured on the cover.

Regardless of that, mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn gives us a fascinating, soulful recital with various accompanying instruments, from three Christmas songs with flute by Frank Martin to Ravel's "Kaddish" accompanied (unusually) by the duduk.

Stotijn sings with sultry beauty in Delage's Quatre Poemes Hindous, to the intoxicating backdrop of a luscious small ensemble, and rises to a rousing conclusion in three songs with viola and piano by Frank Bridge.
