White Hills

Walks for Motorists

(Thrill Jockey)

It is possible for an album to start too strongly. The new record from New York psych-rock duo White Hills leaps out the traps with "No Will", a superb statement of intent whose taut drumming, vibrantly fuzzy guitar and mystical lyrics seem intent on uncovering a hitherto unsuspected meeting ground between The Stooges and Paradise Lost.

The songs flag thereafter, as though exhausted by the opening salvo; but by degrees the twosome, who go by the Cramps-like names of Dave W and Ego Sensation, recover themselves, taking off once more with wild squalls of space-rock in "We Are What You Are".
