'Tamas Dezso: Notes for an Epilogue'

Tamas Dezso started out taking newspaper and magazine photos, and moved into independent photography in 2008. After growing up in Hungary under communism, he is interested in capturing the transition in both his native land and in neighbouring Romania - states that became democracies only in the late 1980s.

Here, Anywhere, his first meditation on post-communist life, focuses on Hungary, while his second - Notes for an Epilogue - looks at Romania. For both he photographs places on the periphery: derelict factories, snowy rural landscapes and villages where people are still adjusting to life in the 21st century.

The first photo above is from Notes for an Epilogue, a series that Dezso says "aims to capture the sense of isolation, disillusionment, patience and hope" in Romania's abandoned communities. As people flock to urban centres, these villages have become decaying symbols of the old regime. Dezso uses winter scenery and a muted palette to conjure a sense of stillness - alluding to those left behind and clinging on to centuries-old traditions.

Ten photos from this series, along with three from Here, Anywhere, are on display in London.

'Tamas Dezso: Notes for an Epilogue' is at the Print Sales Gallery at London's Photographers' Gallery until June 13;thephotographersgallery.org.uk
