National Theatre chief Tessa Ross quits

The National Theatre's chief executive has unexpectedly resigned just six months after taking on the role.

Tessa Ross, who had been working in tandem with artistic director Rufus Norris, criticised the London theatre's management structure and said only one person should be in charge.

"I joined the NT last year and have got to know the organisation in great detail," she said.

"However, it has become clear to me that the new leadership structure, with a separate role of chief executive, is not right for the NT at this time."

Ms Ross, a controller of film and drama at Channel 4 before joining the National Theatre in November, said she would continue working with the NT as a consultant and "ensure the smooth delivery of their first season and planning for the next one".

The theatre's leadership structure will now revert to the previous model, with Mr Norris leading as director, with Lisa Burger as executive director.

The theatre works best with one creative leader and sharing that responsibility simply did not work out on an operation and logistical level, the National Theatre said.

John Makinson, chairman of the National Theatre, said "it is with great regret that we are saying goodbye to Tessa in this role".

However, we recognise and salute the integrity of her decision," he said. "The NT has a strong team in place under the capable and skilful leadership of Rufus and Lisa. The National is in very good hands."

In her stint with Film4, the Bafta-winning Ms Ross had been responsible for producing The Last King of Scotland, Slumdog Millionaire and The Iron Lady.
