Scriabin

Vers la flamme

Vladimir Ashkenazy

(Decca)

Aside from his multi-coloured, far-reaching piano sonatas Scriabin left many smaller pieces for piano, from which Vladimir Ashkenazy has devised this rewardingly varied recital.

The programme proceeds in chronological order, starting out with elegant, Chopin-like Mazurkas and Preludes, and progressing to the late Poemes that foreshadow Debussy and the flickering, hallucinatory Vers la flamme.

Ashkenazy is an authoritative, richly romantic performer of this repertoire.

The music delights with its range and (in the late works) its impressionist sleight of hand.
