What We Do in the Shadows - DVD review

Directed by Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, 2014

Metrodome

The whole vampire thing has been, yes, done to death in recent years but here's a fresh twist: a mockumentary about three undead bachelors housesharing in Wellington.

First up is a meeting to discuss domestic chores called by Viago, a dandy who fusses over his antique furniture, laying down newspaper and towels when "entertaining" visitors.

Less house-proud are mercurial Deacon, Nosferatu-lookalike Peter and ladiesman Vlad, whose ex puts the vamp back into vampire.

It sounds like material for a five-minute sketch but the mythological and the mundane are blended so skilfully and hilariously that these bloodsuckers end up seeming more human than most reality TV stars.
