The Turning - DVD review

Various, 2013

Soda

Based on a 2005 collection of stories by author Tim Winton, this sequence of short films, made by 18 directors, homes in on Australian lives under the shadow of addiction, illness and family breakdown.

Some narratives are loosely linked by family members; in others the legacy of adolescence looms large.

Backstories are hinted at in beautifully shot, sensitively acted scenes - standout leads include Cate Blanchett as a tension-crushed suburban wife and Rose Byrne as a trailer-park victim of domestic violence.

The only problem lies with the feature as a whole. A collection of stories is not best consumed in one sitting; likewise these films.

There are many gems here, but by the end of three hours, memorable moments are simply lost in their abundance.
